Scholar Insight
The doctrine of creation is fundamental to the entire biblical revelation. It is the presupposition of all that follows. — Louis Berkhof, Systematic Theology
Questions
What do we learn about God?
We learn that God is the eternal, sovereign, all-powerful Creator (omnipotent) who brings everything into existence by His spoken word, establishing order from chaos and declaring His creation "very good." "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)
How is Christ Connected?
Jesus is foreshadowed as the active agent in creation, part of the "Us" in the Godhead, through whom all things were made. "Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.'" (Genesis 1:26). While not explicitly named, the New Testament reveals Christ's pre-existence and involvement (e.g., John 1:1-3, Colossians 1:16).
What Theology concept is taught?
This chapter teaches the doctrine of Creation *ex nihilo* (out of nothing) and the doctrine of the Imago Dei (Image of God). God's creative power establishes the foundation for all reality, and humanity's unique dignity is rooted in being made in His image. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27)
Do we see Law or Grace?
God's sovereign commands are the "law" that brings order and existence, establishing natural laws and the purpose for creation. His provision of a good and fruitful world is an act of grace, giving humanity a blessed existence and purpose. "And God blessed them. And God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'" (Genesis 1:28)
Personal Application
We should worship God as our wise and powerful Creator, acknowledge His ultimate authority over all creation, diligently care for the world He has entrusted to us, and recognize the inherent dignity and value of all people made in His image. "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day." (Genesis 1:31)
