Scholar Insight

"Karen Jobes, in Esther (The NIV Application Commentary), notes that "Vashti’s refusal to appear before the king...is generally viewed as a courageous act of resistance, but it is also possible that she refused to be objectified as a mere display.""

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We see God's sovereignty operating behind the scenes. Though God is not explicitly mentioned in the book, his hand is guiding events for the protection of his people, even in a seemingly secular context. "...who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14

Christological Connection

While not a direct reference, Vashti's dethronement and replacement can be seen as a foreshadowing of the rejection of the old covenant and the establishment of a new covenant through Jesus. "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20

Systematic Theology

Divine Providence. God's invisible hand working through human actions and circumstances to accomplish his purposes. "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Proverbs 16:9

Law & Grace

The decree establishing male dominance represents a form of legalism (a man made law), contrasting with the grace extended to Esther later, allowing her to intercede for her people. "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:17

Personal Application

Be aware of the consequences of pride and disobedience. Also be aware of the subtle ways God works through everyday circumstances. "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” James 4:10
