Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is holy and glorious, yet also compassionate and willing to be in relationship with His people. "The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness," (Exodus 34:6)

Christological Connection

While not directly named, this passage foreshadows the incarnation, where God's glory is fully revealed in Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:7)

Systematic Theology

The attributes of God are central here, particularly His holiness, glory, mercy, and grace.

Law & Grace

The people's sin with the golden calf (earlier in Exodus) highlights the tension between law (God's commands) and grace (God's continued presence despite their disobedience). God's willingness to renew the covenant is an act of grace.

Personal Application

With reverence and awe towards God's holiness, and with gratitude for His mercy and grace. "Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe," (Hebrews 12:28)
