Isaiah 44

Main Highlights

God is the only true God, the creator of all things, and he alone is worthy of worship. He mocks the folly of idolaters and promises to bless and restore his people.

Key Verses

But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen! Thus says the Lord who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen.- Isaiah 44:1-2
I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself.- Isaiah 44:24
He cuts down cedars, or he chooses a cypress tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar, and the rain nourishes it. Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it.- Isaiah 44:14-15

Related Scripture

We know that an idol has no real existence, and that there is no God but one.- 1 Corinthians 8:4

Scholar Insight

"Isaiah 44's polemic against idolatry isn't simply a matter of intellectual superiority. It's a passionate defense of God's unique power to create and redeem, contrasted with the impotence of human-made idols. - Christopher Seitz, Isaiah 40-66: A Commentary (Westminster John Knox Press, 1993)."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me (Isaiah 45:5) We learn that God is the sovereign Lord, the only true God, who empowers his people even when they don't fully understand him.

Christological Connection

This chapter is a reference to Jesus because he is the only God "Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself," (Isaiah 44:24)

Systematic Theology

Theology Proper (the study of God): The passage emphasizes God's unique creation of all things. He has a personal relationship with his creation through forming humans in the womb.

Law & Grace

I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.” (Isaiah 44:22) This chapter shows that they transgressed the law, but God showed grace and offered redemption.

Personal Application

Return to me, for I have redeemed you.” (Isaiah 44:22). We should respond by turning away from false idols and worldly things, and returning to a loving and faithful relationship with God.
