Scholar Insight

""Jeremiah 23 focuses on the contrast between the bad leadership of the present rulers of Judah and the good leadership that will be manifested in the future messianic king. The chapter also attacks false prophets, thus making a contrast between true and false prophetic leadership." - (Feinberg, Charles L. "Jeremiah: A Commentary." Zondervan, 1982. p. 157)"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is just and will punish the wicked shepherds and false prophets, but He is also merciful and will raise up a righteous leader. “Am I a God who is near,” declares Yahweh, “And not a God who is far off?” (Jeremiah 23:23)

Christological Connection

Jesus is referenced as the "righteous Branch" from the line of David who will reign justly. “Behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land.” (Jeremiah 23:5)

Systematic Theology

This passage teaches about Christology, specifically the messianic promise of a future king from the line of David who will establish justice and righteousness.

Law & Grace

The law is implied through the condemnation of the false shepherds and prophets who are not upholding God's standards. Grace is implied in God's promise to raise up a righteous Branch, offering hope for redemption.

Personal Application

We should be discerning about the leaders we follow and ensure they are leading according to God's truth. We should also be wary of false prophets and their teachings. "Let him who has My word speak My word faithfully.” declares Yahweh. “What does straw have in common with grain?” declares Yahweh. (Jeremiah 23:28)
