And now I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and I have given him also the beasts of the field to serve him.’”- Jeremiah 27:4-6 “But if any nation or kingdom will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and will not put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, declares Yahweh, until I have finished it off by his hand.”- Jeremiah 27:8 “So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers, who are saying to you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’”- Jeremiah 27:9

Scholar Insight

"Jeremiah's instruction to submit to Babylon was a difficult message to deliver, but it was essential for the survival of the people during God's judgment. - J.A. Thompson, The Book of Jeremiah (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1980), p. 528."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is sovereign over all nations and uses them to accomplish his purposes, even pagan kings are tools in His hand. I have made the earth, the people and the beasts which are on the face of the earth, by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and I give it to whomever it pleases Me. (Jeremiah 27:5)

Christological Connection

While not directly referenced, there is a parallel in Jesus' call to submission to God's will, even when it is difficult or painful. Yet not what I will, but what You will. (Mark 14:36)

Systematic Theology

God's Sovereignty and Human Responsibility. God decreed that Judah would be subject to Babylon and punishes those who resist, but Judah is responsible for their fate. I have made the earth, the people and the beasts which are on the face of the earth, by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and I give it to whomever it pleases Me. (Jeremiah 27:5)

Law & Grace

The law is the standard that Judah broke and Babylon is the instrument of judgement for breaking the law. However, submission is the path of least resistance to Gods punishment. But if any nation or kingdom will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and will not put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, declares Yahweh, until I have finished it off by his hand. (Jeremiah 27:8)

Personal Application

Christians should recognize God's sovereignty in their lives and submit to his will, even when it is challenging, trusting that he is working for their good. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5)
