Questions

What do we learn about God?

God is faithful to His promises, providing the land as an inheritance for His people. However, this chapter reveals God's expectation that His people will actively obey and take possession of what He has graciously given, even rebuking their slowness to act. "How long will you put off going in to take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you?" - Joshua 18:3.

How is Christ Connected?

The promised land of Canaan, though a physical inheritance, foreshadows the spiritual inheritance believers have in Christ. Just as the Israelites were to enter and possess their land, believers are called to enter into the rest and abundant life found in Jesus, the ultimate fulfillment of God's promises. "the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you?" - Joshua 18:3.

What Theology concept is taught?

This chapter illustrates the theological concept of human responsibility and stewardship in receiving God's promises. While God provides the inheritance, His people are commanded to act, survey, and organize to take full possession of their allotted portion, highlighting that faith involves diligent action. "Provide three men from each tribe, and I will send them out that they may set out and go through the land and write a description of it with a view to their inheritances." - Joshua 18:4.

Do we see Law or Grace?

The narrative demonstrates the tension between God's gracious provision of the land as an inheritance and the Law's requirement for active obedience to possess it. While the land was a gift of grace, the Israelites' delay revealed a failure to uphold the command to "take possession" of what was freely given. "How long will you put off going in to take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you?" - Joshua 18:3.

Personal Application

Believers should respond to God's promises and commands with timely and decisive action, not delaying in fulfilling the callings He has placed on their lives. We are urged to actively pursue and steward the spiritual inheritances and responsibilities God has graciously provided. "How long will you put off going in to take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you?" - Joshua 18:3.
