Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn that God is grieved by injustice and moral corruption. “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.” (Genesis 6:5-6)

Christological Connection

While not explicitly, the events foreshadow the need for a righteous King who will establish justice and righteousness, which is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

Systematic Theology

The Doctrine of Sin and its pervasive effects on individuals and society.

Law & Grace

The absence of law leads to utter depravity and the need for God's grace to restore righteousness. “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace." (Romans 6:14)

Personal Application

With repentance, a commitment to justice, and a seeking of God's guidance to live righteously. “Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph." (Amos 5:15)
