Scholar Insight

"Luke's account of the birth of Jesus is carefully constructed to emphasize his significance as the promised Messiah, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, and the Savior of all people. The inclusion of the shepherds, representing the marginalized, highlights the universal scope of God's salvation." - Darrell L. Bock, Luke 1:1-9:50 (BECNT; Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 1994), 215."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is sovereign and orchestrates events to fulfill his promises. "Now it happened in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth." (Luke 2:1)

Christological Connection

Jesus is referenced as the Savior, Christ the Lord, born in Bethlehem. "For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:11)

Systematic Theology

The humility of Christ is demonstrated in His birth in a manger. "And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn." (Luke 2:7)

Law & Grace

The presentation of Jesus at the temple and the sacrifice offered fulfilled the requirements of the Law but also pointed to the grace that would be offered through Jesus. "And when the days for their purification according to the Law of Moses were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord." (Luke 2:22)

Personal Application

We should worship Jesus and share the good news with others. "And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them." (Luke 2:20)
