Malachi 4

Main Highlights

The day of the Lord will bring judgment on the wicked and blessing on the righteous. Elijah will come before that great day to turn the hearts of fathers to their children.

Key Verses

“’For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them ablaze,’ says Yahweh of hosts, ‘so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.’ But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and frisk about like calves from the stall.”- Malachi 4:1-2
“Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of Yahweh. And he will turn the hearts of fathers toward their children, and the hearts of children toward their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a curse.”- Malachi 4:5-6

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is a righteous judge, but also a source of healing and blessing for those who fear Him. “For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; the upright will behold His face." (Psalm 11:7)

Christological Connection

The “sun of righteousness” is a Messianic reference, pointing to Jesus Christ as the source of healing and salvation.

Systematic Theology

The Doctrine of Last Things (Eschatology) is prominent, focusing on the final judgment and the ultimate destiny of the righteous and the wicked.

Law & Grace

The law is referenced in the judgement of the wicked and the call for reconciliation, but grace is offered as the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings (Malachi 4:2).

Personal Application

We should live in reverence of God, seeking reconciliation with others, especially within our families, and looking forward to the coming of the Lord. “Pursue peace with all, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord." (Hebrews 12:14)
