Micah 2

Main Highlights

Woe to those who devise wickedness and oppress the poor; a remnant will be gathered and led by Yahweh.

Key Verses

Woe to those who devise wickedness, who practice evil on their beds! When morning dawns, they perform it because it is in the power of their hand.- Micah 2:1“Get up and go, for this is not your resting place; because of defilement that destroys, yes, with a grievous destruction."- Micah 2:10“I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob, I will certainly collect the remnant of Israel. I will put them together like sheep in the fold; like a flock in its pasture they will be noisy with people.- Micah 2:12

Related Scripture

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.- Matthew 6:19

Scholar Insight

""Micah 2 condemns the wealthy landowners who exploited the poor for their own gain, highlighting the social injustices that permeated Israelite society." - Bruce K. Waltke, An Old Testament Theology (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2007), p. 778."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is a defender of the poor and oppressed, and He will judge those who exploit them. (Micah 2:2-3)

Christological Connection

The promise of gathering the remnant and the leader breaking out before them can be seen as foreshadowing the gathering of believers by Jesus and His role as the Good Shepherd.

Systematic Theology

Social Justice is taught in these passages and Gods character shows him to be a defender of the poor and oppressed.

Law & Grace

The Law is violated by those who oppress the poor, while the promise of gathering the remnant suggests a future act of grace and restoration.

Personal Application

People should respond by practicing justice and righteousness, caring for the poor and vulnerable, and avoiding the temptation to exploit others for personal gain. "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does Yahweh require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8)
