Numbers 26
Main Highlights
A second census of Israel is taken on the plains of Moab, revealing the sizes of the tribes, preparing for the division of the Promised Land, and confirming the death of the previous rebellious generation.
Key Verses
Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.— Numbers 26:2
To these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names.— Numbers 26:53
But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.— Numbers 26:64
Scholar Insight
“The census served a number of important purposes. It provided the information needed for the equitable distribution of land, measured the tribes' strength for military service, and indicated population growth of each tribe since the Exodus.” - R.K. Harrison, Introduction to the Old Testament
Questions
What do we learn about God?
We learn about God's meticulousness and faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and judgments. He keeps His word exactly, as "there was not left a man of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun" (Numbers 26:65).
How is Christ Connected?
While not explicit, the careful division of land foreshadows the eternal inheritance believers receive in Christ. Just as Israel was promised "the land shall be divided for inheritance" (Numbers 26:53), Jesus secures our heavenly inheritance.
What Theology concept is taught?
This passage illustrates Divine Providence and Justice. God's sovereignty is demonstrated in how He orchestrated the wilderness wanderings so that the rebellious generation perished, for "the Lord had said of them, 'They shall die in the wilderness'" (Numbers 26:65).
Do we see Law or Grace?
The Law and its penalties are evident as the older generation died for their rebellion. Grace is seen in God's ongoing provision for the new generation, saying, "To these the land shall be divided as an inheritance" (Numbers 26:53).
Personal Application
We should trust in God's faithfulness and not rebel like the previous generation, recognizing that those who sinned "became a warning" (Numbers 26:10) to the rest of the congregation.
