Scholar Insight
"The Levites are set apart by a redemptive event so that they are fully and properly prepared for ministry in the tabernacle, so, too, Christians should be set apart by the redemptive grace of God to then be prepared for ministry." [Dennis Cole, Numbers, New American Commentary (Nashville: Broadman & Holman, 2000), p. 160]"
Theological Analysis
What we learn about God
God is holy and requires holiness in those who serve Him. "And you shall cleanse them and present them as a wave offering. For they are wholly given to me from among the people of Israel. Instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all Israel, I have taken them for myself." (Numbers 8:11) God's holiness and requirement for purity are emphasized.
Christological Connection
The Levites as mediators foreshadow Jesus as the ultimate mediator between God and humanity. "For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5).
Systematic Theology
Sanctification. The Levites were set apart and purified for a specific purpose. "Thus you shall do to them to cleanse them. Sprinkle the water of purification upon them, and let them go with a razor over all their body and wash their clothes and cleanse themselves." (Numbers 8:7)
Law & Grace
The Levitical laws demonstrate the necessity of adhering to God's requirements for service (law). God's election of the Levites to be His servants is an act of grace. "For they are wholly given to me from among the people of Israel. Instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all Israel, I have taken them for myself." (Numbers 8:16)
Personal Application
Strive for holiness and dedication in service to God. "Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship." (Romans 12:1)
