Key Verses

For at the window of my house I have looked out through my lattice, and I have seen among the simple, I have perceived among the youths, a young man lacking sense, passing along the street near her corner, taking the road to her house in the twilight, in the evening, at the time of night and darkness.- Proverbs 7:6-9 So she seizes him and kisses him, and with brazen face she says to him, 'I had to offer sacrifices, and today I have paid my vows. Therefore I have come out to meet you, to seek you eagerly, and I have found you. I have decked my bed with coverings, colored linens from Egyptian cotton; I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. Come, let us take our fill of love till morning; let us delight ourselves with love. For my husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey; he took a bag of money with him; he will come home at the full moon.'- Proverbs 7:13-20 With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him. All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught fast till an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not know that it will cost him his life.- Proverbs 7:21-23

Scholar Insight

"The point of this chapter is to show the folly and shortsightedness of the one who gives in to temptation. He is completely blind to the consequences and allured only by immediate gratification. - Allen P. Ross, Holiness to the Lord: A Guide to the Exposition of the Book of Proverbs (Baker Academic, 2011), p. 842"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We see God's concern for our well-being and his provision of warnings to protect us from harmful choices. 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.' (Proverbs 1:7)

Christological Connection

While not directly mentioned, Jesus embodies wisdom and offers a path away from destructive temptations. 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' (John 14:6)

Systematic Theology

This passage emphasizes the Doctrine of Sin and its deceptive nature. It reveals the consequences of choosing sin and the importance of resisting temptation.

Law & Grace

The 'law' is seen in the natural consequences of sin, the pain and destruction that follow unwise choices. Grace is offered through God's warnings and provision of wisdom to choose a better path. 'For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.' (Romans 6:14)

Personal Application

We should cultivate wisdom and discernment, recognizing and avoiding situations that could lead to temptation. We should also seek accountability and support from others. 'Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.' (Matthew 26:41)
