What we learn about God

God is merciful and compassionate, hearing the prayers of even the disobedient. He is a God of salvation, able to deliver from even the most desperate situations.

Christological Connection

Again, Jesus uses the sign of Jonah as a prophecy of his own resurrection. Jonah's deliverance from the belly of the fish prefigures Jesus' victory over death.

Systematic Theology

The efficacy of prayer. Jonah's prayer demonstrates that God hears and responds to the prayers of His people, even when they are in dire circumstances.

Law & Grace

Jonah's situation is a consequence of his disobedience to the law (God's command). However, God's grace is evident in His willingness to hear Jonah's prayer and deliver him.

Personal Application

We should turn to God in prayer in times of trouble, confessing our sins and seeking His forgiveness. We should trust in His saving power and offer Him thanksgiving for His deliverance.
