Deuteronomy 10

Main Highlights

Moses recounts the carving of the second set of stone tablets and the placing of them in the ark of the covenant, demonstrating God's renewed grace after Israel's rebellion. The chapter culminates in a profound summary of what God requires: to fear Him, walk in His ways, love Him, and serve Him wholeheartedly, while circumcising their hearts and caring for the sojourner.

Key Verses

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good?— Deuteronomy 10:12-13
Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn.— Deuteronomy 10:16
For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.— Deuteronomy 10:17

Scholar Insight

“The demand for a circumcised heart points to the necessity of internal renewal, which the Law commands but only God's Spirit can accomplish. True obedience stems from a heart transformed by God's grace.” - J.A. Thompson, Deuteronomy: An Introduction and Commentary

Questions

What do we learn about God?

We learn of God's transcendent majesty and His immanent care. He is described as the God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who is not partial and takes no bribe. Yet, in His supreme greatness, He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and shows love to the sojourner.

How is Christ Connected?

Jesus is foreshadowed as the ultimate fulfillment of the Law and the one who perfectly embodies the requirements of Deuteronomy 10. He alone loved the Lord with all His heart and soul, and through the New Covenant He established, He provides the true circumcision of the heart that the Law demanded but could not externally produce.

What Theology concept is taught?

The doctrines of Covenant Renewal and Sanctification are present. Despite Israel's idolatry with the golden calf, God graciously renews His covenant, seen in the second set of tablets. The chapter also teaches the necessity of internal regeneration (circumcision of the heart) as the basis for true obedience.

Do we see Law or Grace?

The Law is clearly articulated in God's commands to walk in His ways and keep His statutes for their good. However, grace precedes the Law, as God graciously provided the second set of tablets after Israel's rebellion. Grace is also the foundation of obedience, as God chose their fathers in love and calls them to a relationship rather than just a rigid set of rules.

Personal Application

Believers should respond by recognizing that outward religious observance is insufficient without an inward transformation. We are called to love and revere God wholeheartedly, and this vertical love must translate horizontally into caring for the marginalized, just as God loves the sojourner.
