1 Kings 18

Main Highlights

God demonstrates His power and sovereignty over false gods through Elijah's dramatic confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.

Key Verses

And Elijah came near to all the people and said, 'How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.' And the people did not answer him a word."— 1 Kings 18:21
"And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, 'O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.'"— 1 Kings 18:36-37
"And the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench."— 1 Kings 18:38

Related Scripture

I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God."Isaiah 45:5

Scholar Insight

"The Carmel experience showed both the apostasy and the grace of Israel. Their defection to Baal made judgment inevitable. Yet God condescended to manifest His power so dramatically, not merely to punish the Baal prophets, but to turn the people back to Himself." – Eugene Merrill, Kingdom of Priests, p. 242."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about God's jealousy for His name and His power to manifest Himself undeniably. "The Lord, the God of your father, Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Israel, this day let it be known that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word." (1 Kings 18:36)

Christological Connection

Elijah can be seen as a type of Christ, confronting evil and demonstrating God's power. The coming of Christ is foretold in Malachi and references Elijah to prepare the way. "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes." (Malachi 4:5)

Systematic Theology

The concept of monotheism is strongly affirmed. "And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, 'The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.'" (1 Kings 18:39)

Law & Grace

The law is evident in the covenant with God, which Israel has broken by worshiping Baal. Grace is evident in God's willingness to reveal Himself and give them a chance to repent. "If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Personal Application

We should examine our own lives to see if we are compromising our faith with other "gods" (idols of money, power, comfort, etc.) and recommit ourselves to wholehearted devotion to God. "You shall not have other gods before me." (Exodus 20:3)
