Scholar Insight

"The visit of the Queen of Sheba…serves to emphasize the international significance of Solomon's wisdom and power, which were seen as manifestations of the Lord's favor. It also foreshadows the future universal kingdom of God. – Iain Provan, 1 & 2 Kings (NIBC; Peabody: Hendrickson, 1995), p. 123."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about God's character as a giver of wisdom, wealth, and honor. He is the ultimate source of Solomon's blessings. "Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and set you on the throne of Israel! Because the Lord loved Israel forever, he has made you king, that you may execute justice and righteousness." (1 Kings 10:9)

Christological Connection

Solomon's wisdom and kingdom foreshadow the greater wisdom and kingdom of Christ. "The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here." (Matthew 12:42)

Systematic Theology

God's sovereignty and providence are clearly demonstrated. God orchestrates events to bless those who are faithful.

Law & Grace

The blessings that Solomon received for his initial devotion to God and adherence to the Law exemplifies grace, and highlights the blessings that obedience to the law can bring.

Personal Application

We should seek wisdom from God, acknowledge Him as the source of all blessings, and strive to live in obedience to His commands. We should avoid falling into pride or self-reliance. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6)
